Objectives

The aim of the course is to enhance competence in the historical, scientific, and cultural foundation of midwifery care, as well as sexual health. The course provides the skills to understand the historical, scientific, and culturally-based foundation of midwifery care and discuss issues related to sexuality with clients.

After completing the course, the student:

• understands the historical and interdisciplinary background of midwifery care
• knows the legislative basis of midwifery care
• adopts a culturally sensitive approach in midwifery care
• applies theoretical knowledge of midwifery in promoting sexual and reproductive health
• is capable of discussing sexuality with a wide range of midwifery clients
• can provide guidance on sexuality-related issues throughout the lifespan and in specific situations during illness, pregnancy, and postpartum periods
• operates with an inclusive approach considering gender and sexual diversity
• can reflect on the development of their own thinking and competence in matters related to sexuality

Content

• the history of midwifery care and the scientific and legislative foundation of midwifery care
• cultural sensitivity in midwifery care
• legislation governing sexual and reproductive health
• sexology
• promoting sexual and reproductive health in midwifery care
• discussing sexuality
• the most common changes in sexuality due to aging, pregnancy, postpartum period, and illness
• gender and sexual diversity

Prerequisites

The student must have completed the nursing studies except the Bachelor’s Thesis. The student cannot participate until Supervised clinical training 1-7 and all theoretical and clinical nursing studies are completed.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass:
The student:
• can describe the development of evidence-based knowledge in midwifery
• can describe the historical and legislative foundation of midwifery care
• can reflect on the significance of a culturally sensitive approach in midwifery care
• has the central knowledge base of sexual and reproductive health in midwifery care
• follows methods for discussing sexuality and can apply them as needed
• is aware of common special situations related to sexuality during illness, pregnancy, and the postpartum period and can guide patients/clients in these situations
• understands the fundamental terminology related to gender and sexual diversity and can interact inclusively with various client groups
• reflects on the development of their own competence and thinking in matters related to sexuality

Fail:
The student
• has weak understanding in the development of evidence-based knowledge in midwifery, as well as its legislative and historical foundation
• does not recognize the significance of a culturally sensitive approach in midwifery care
• has limited knowledge of sexual and reproductive health in midwifery care
• has limited familiarity with methods for discussing sexuality and cannot apply them effectively
• knows some situations related to sexuality during illness, pregnancy, and the postpartum period but cannot effectively apply this knowledge to guide patients/clients
• has weak understanding of the basic terminology related to gender and sexual diversity and does not adhere to the principles of an inclusive approach
• reflects on the development of their own competence and thinking in matters related to sexuality minimally and in an unstructured manner
