Objectives
The student
- demonstrates mastery of the key knowledge in assessing and supporting the vital functions of a critically ill or disabled patient and is able to observe, assess and support the vital functions of a critically ill or injured patient in the emergency care, high dependency care or intensive care units
- demonstrates mastery of the evidence-based practice of the critically ill or disabled patient at different phases of the care path
-is able to work in a multidisciplinary team
-knows the physiology of breathing and circulation
- is able to manage airway by using supraglottic device if necessary
- knows the intubation devices and the intubation technique and is able to assist in an intubation
- is able to take care of the patient in the ventilator

Content
- non-invasive and invasive observation, evaluation, and support of the basic vital functions of a critically ill or disabled patient
- evidence-based practice of a critically ill or injured patient at different phases of the care path
- pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy of critically ill and injured patient

- airway management and breathing support of the patient, needed equipment and technique
- the monitoring and care of the patient in the ventilator

Prerequisites
At the beginning of Advanced Level Emergency Care studies, the student must have completed 140 credits of studies. These should include studies in Anatomy and Physiology, The Basic Level Emergency Care skills and Supervised Clinical Trainings 1-5.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student
- masters basics of theoretical knowledge and recognises evidence-based knowledge in nursing care for a patient with a sudden illness or disability
- is generally able to assess the patient's condition and need for care, to plan his/her care and to perform the nursing care but cannot always explain his/her activities
- describes in general the patient's pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy and performs medical calculations
- knows some of the dressing and cast techniques and understands the importance of patient observation and guidance
- is able to take care of a patient in a ventilator but needs guidance
-is able to act as a leader and a member of the group in a resuscitation
- is able to work in a multidisciplinary team as a member of the group but needs guidance
- understands the importance of open airways and adequate respiratory functions for the patient
- is able to manage the airway by various means and, if necessary, to assist breathing
- understands the importance of a sudden illness or disability in the life of the patient and his family and is able to support them primarily in self-care
- identifies his/her own interaction skills in nursing and knows how to work as a member of a group
- identifies the ethical principles of nursing

The student
- masters the theoretical knowledge of nursing and is able to apply evidence-based knowledge in nursing care of a suddenly ill or disabled patient
- is able to observe and assess the patient's vital functions and need for care and to plan and implement his / her care in a comprehensive manner, as well as being able to explain his / her activities
- masters pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy and performs medication calculation
-knows the dressing and cast techniques and understands the importance of patient observation and guidance
- is able to take care of a patient in a ventilator
- is able to act as a leader and a member of the group in a resuscitation
- is able to work in a multidisciplinary team as a member of the group- -understands the importance of open airways and adequate respiratory functions for the patient
- is able to manage the airway by various means and, if necessary, to assist breathing

- is able to apply nursing process, taking into account the individuality of the patient and his / her family
- is able to implement and evaluate the patient's nursing care and to explain his/her actions thoroughly
- has comprehensive knowledge of pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy and performs medication calculation
- knows the dressing and cast techniques and understands the importance of patient observation and guidance
- is able to take holistic care of a patient in a ventilator
- is able to act as a leader and a member of the group in a resuscitation
- is able to work constructively in a multidisciplinary team as a member of the group
- understands the importance of open airways and adequate respiratory functions for the patient
