Objectives

The objective of the course is to familiarize oneself with the basic methods of molecular biology and their applications in clinical diagnostics.

After completion of the course the student:
• knows the key methods used in molecular biology and perform practical exercises under supervision
• knows the basics of recombinant DNA technology and its main applications
• knows the steps of nucleic acid purification
• describes the basics of amplification methods
• knows the basics of hybridization and sequencing methods
• knows how methods of molecular biology are applied in clinical diagnostics.

Content

• Human genome, chromosomal structure, gene structure and expression, common types of mutations
• Molecular biology samples
• Isolation and purification of nucleic acids
• Amplification methods, electrophoresis
• Sequencing and hybridization
• Applications of molecular biology in clinical diagnostics

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student is capable of searching for information from relevant sources within the field and sharing their expertise with the group. The student demonstrates attainment of the core competency objectives. They possess knowledge of basic molecular biology methods and are aware of their common applications in diagnostics. Additionally, the student has knowledge of ethical issues and legislation within the field. They are able to perform common basic molecular biology methods in the laboratory under supervision and demonstrate safe laboratory practices.

The student is capable of independently seeking information and critically utilizing relevant sources within the field, and effectively applying their expertise to the group's objectives.
