Objectives
During the course, students learn to prevent and control infectious diseases and acquire knowledge and skills to work in vaccination-related nursing tasks.
Upon completing the course, the student
• knows the obligations of the Communicable Diseases Act and Ordinance in nursing in Finland
• identifies central and current national and global communicable diseases and knows how to prevent and treat them at individual and population level
• is familiar with vaccine-preventable diseases
• knows the different types of vaccines and key information on the composition of vaccines
• can provide guidance to clients on vaccination issues in both English and Finnish language
• knows the vaccines included in the national vaccination programme in Finland
• understands the principles of safe vaccination
• knows the central terminology in Finnish

30 ects of first year studies completed, including Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations.

The student
• knows the obligations imposed by the Communicable Diseases Act and Regulation in nursing in Finland
• identifies some of the main communicable diseases and knows how to prevent and treat them at individual and population level
• knows the different types of vaccines and the corresponding guidelines
• knows some of the vaccines included in the national vaccination programme in Finland
• knows the principles of vaccination
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student
• knows the obligations imposed by the Communicable Diseases Act and Regulation in nursing in Finland
• identifies the main national and global communicable diseases and knows how to prevent and treat them at individual and population level
• knows the different types of vaccines and the corresponding guidelines
• knows how to give advice to clients on vaccination
• knows the vaccines included in the national vaccination programme in Finland
• knows the principles of safe vaccination
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student
• knows the obligations imposed by the Communicable Diseases Act and Decree in nursing in Finland
• identifies key and current national and global communicable diseases and knows how to prevent and treat them at individual and population level
• knows the different types of vaccines and can apply his/her vaccination knowledge in the context of different vaccines
• can provide individualised advice to clients on vaccination issues
• knows the vaccines included in the national vaccination programme in Finland
• knows the principles of safe vaccination
