Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will understand and be able to measure and analyse air pollutants and their sources relevant to health, both outdoors and indoors.
On completion of the course, the student will
• understand air quality concepts, standards and limit values
• understand the physical conditions, chemical and biological pollutants and factors affecting building health and air quality
• nowledge of the main methods of investigation and measurement and related sampling used in the assessment of building health and air quality
• understand the health effects of air and building pollutants
• be able to prepare and present a research report on measurements

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student knows the most common concepts related to building health and air quality. The student knows the principles of indoor air quality classification. The student knows the most common chemical, microbiological and physical factors related to air quality. The student will be familiar with the most common key methods of investigation and measurement and sampling used in the assessment of building health and air quality.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student can explain the most common concepts related to building health and air quality. The student knows the classification of indoor air quality and understands how legislation regulates air quality. The student can describe the chemical, microbiological and physical factors related to air quality and their effects. The student will be able to describe the main methods of investigation and measurement used in the assessment of building health and air quality, including sampling, and understand the sources of error in sampling and analytical methods.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student can explain the concepts related to building health and air quality and the indoor air quality classification and knows the related key legislation. The student can explain the chemical, microbiological and physical factors related to air quality and understand how they as a whole affect human and building health.
The student will be able to explain the main methods of investigation and measurement and sampling used in the assessment of building health and air quality, to evaluate the quality of samples and analyses and to evaluate the results obtained on the basis of literature and guidelines.
