Objectives

The student
• is able to design PLC control systems based on IEC 61131 standard
• is able to document and comment PLC program and utilize different tools in designing the structure of the software program
• can design, execute, test and validate a PLC program to simple machine automation processes
• is able to define the hardware structure and communication between the devices
• use general station description (GSD) files and attach intelligent devices (e.g. machine vision cameras) to a control system
• is able to test and commission a simple machine automation control system

Prerequisites

Basics of automation technology and PLC programming
•Binary operation and digital input and outputs
• Analog signals and AD/DA-conversions
• Numeral systems and mathematical operations
(Automation technology 1 & 2)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student is able to design and document a simple control system with assistance. The student is able to define the structure and communication of a simple control system. The student is able to execute a PLC program with certain working elements.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student is able to design and document a control system. The student is able to define the structure and communication of a control system. The student is able to execute a PLC program with desired functional properties.
The student is able to execute the commissioning of the control system and document the work appropriately.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to design and document a control system.
The student is able to define the structure and communication of a control system.
The student is able to execute a PLC program with desired functional properties and take into account possible system changes and expansions.
The student is able to execute the commissioning of the control system and document the work at the professional level.
