Objectives

Upon successfully completing the study module, the student will:
• Be able to select and size servo system components for typical machine automation applications.
• Know the basics of control engineering
• Be able to use modeling and simulation software in the design and analysis of servo and control system
• Be able to select and tune appropriate controller type for different motion control applications
• Be able to analyze the performance of the control system
• Be able to implement a motion control application using analog electronics, microcontroller and PLC control unit.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student adequately knows the the basics of control and servo technology. The student is able to size a simple servo system and select components for it, as assisted if necessary. With an assistance, the student is able to utilize modeling and simulation software in the analysis of servo stems. The student is able to select and tune a controller to a simple system.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student knows the basics of control and servo technology well. The student is able to size a simple servo system and select components for it independently. The student is able to utilize modeling and simulation software in the analysis of servo systems. The student is able to select and tune a controller to a typical servo system.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has an excellent knowledge of the basics of control and servo technology. The student is able to size a challenging servo system and select components for it independently. The student is able to utilize modeling and simulation software in a variety of ways in the analysis of servo systems. The student is able to select and tune a controller to a typical servo system. The student is able to apply learned skills in machine automation motion control systems.
