Objectives

The aim of the course is to enable the student to analyse the most common processes involving mass transfer and chemical reactions.

Upon completion of the course, the student will
• be able to explain the phenomena and equipment used in mass transfer and unit chemical processes used in the process industry
• be able to select a separation method based on need and be able to solve sizing and balance calculations related to unit processes.
• can apply their knowledge in subsequent studies and use their skills in future work.

Content

Phenomena related to mass transfer processes. Mass transfer technology includes unit processes and related equipment from the following unit processes: distillation, ion exchange, membrane processes, absorption, adsorption and extraction. Key equipment, reactors and their sizing for chemical unit processes.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student can define the phenomena related to mass transfer and chemical unit processes and knows the main equipment solutions used in these processes. The student can solve simple sizing problems comparable to the tasks covered in the course.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student can explain the phenomena involved in mass transfer and chemical unit processes and can compare equipment solutions used in these processes. The student can apply his/her knowledge and perform more extensive and demanding dimensioning tasks than the basic tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has a comprehensive understanding of mass transfer and unit chemical processes The student knows the equipment solutions used in mass transfer and unit chemical processes and can compare and evaluate different equipment options. The student can solve challenging and applied problems. They can search for different solution options and justify their choices.
