Objectives

The aim of the course is to develop basic knowledge of polymer chemistry.

Upon completion of the course, students will
• know the classification and structure of polymers and biopolymers, properties, manufacturing methods and applications
• know the most common matrix and reinforcing materials of composite materials, the basic structures of composites, properties, manufacturing methods and applications
• recognise the limitations and potential of materials and structures
• be able to evaluate the future prospects of materials

Content

• polymers and biopolymers: classification, structures, properties, manufacturing methods and applications
• matrix and reinforcing materials
• basic structures, properties, manufacturing methods and applications of composites
• future prospects

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Students will recognise the classification and structure of polymers and biopolymers. They know the basic properties of polymers and composites, the most common manufacturing methods and applications. The student will be able to list the most common matrix and reinforcing materials for plastic composites. Understand the limitations and potential of polymeric materials and composite structures. Participate in the evaluation of the future prospects of polymers and composites.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Students will be familiar with the classification and structure of polymers and biopolymers. They understand the basic properties of polymers and composites, the most common manufacturing methods and applications. The student will know the most common matrix and reinforcing materials for plastic composites and be able to deduce their applications. The student will compare the limitations and potential of polymeric materials and composite structures. The student will be able to analyse the future prospects of polymers and composites.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students will be able to apply their knowledge to the classification and structure of polymers and biopolymers. They will understand the basic properties of polymers and composites, the most common manufacturing methods and applications. The student will know the most common matrix and reinforcing materials for plastic composites and will be able to broadly deduce their applications. The student will compare the limitations and potential of polymeric materials and composite structures. The student will be able to analyse extensively the prospects of polymers and composites for new applications.
