Objectives

The aim of the course is to learn how to work safely in the laboratory and to follow the instructions in Finnish and English.
After completing the course, the student
• understands the importance of safety at work.
• understands the construction and use of organic chemistry equipment
• understands the most common working methods in organic chemistry and is able to apply them when synthesising and analysing organic substances.
• be able to interpret and report the results of their work.

Content

Working safely in the laboratory. Construction and use of organic chemistry equipment. Common organic chemistry techniques, syntheses and analyses of organic substances.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student has followed the rules of the laboratory. The student has passed all laboratory work, exams and reports. The student performs the assigned tasks under supervision/assistance. The student takes responsibility for his/her own performance and is able to give and receive feedback.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student has followed the rules of the laboratory. The student has completed all laboratory work according to the objectives, within the time limits and has demonstrated a smooth workflow. Reports have been written according to the instructions. The student has also performed well in the examinations of the course.
The student is able to choose the most appropriate approach from a range of options and justify his/her choice. The student will be able to take responsibility and commitment not only for his/her own performance but also for the performance of the group and will be able to give and receive feedback in an active and constructive way.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has followed the rules of the laboratory. The student has completed all laboratory work according to the objectives within the time limits and has demonstrated a smooth working style and has worked in a team under the guidance of others. Reports are finalised. The student's answers to examinations are justified. Students are able to look for different approaches and solutions, justify their choices and experiment with new approaches. The student is able to work in a responsible, flexible and constructive way. Develop personal and group interaction. Systematically use feedback as a tool for professional growth, both for him/herself and for the community.
