Objectives
The aim of the course is to create knowledge on the targets and technologies for paper and paper board surface treatment.
After completing the course, the student:
• knows the targets of coating and surface sizing and their requirements on base paper
• identifies the principles of the different paper and paper board coating and surface sizing processes
• knows the raw materials of coating and surface sizing and can select suitable raw materials based on end use requirements
• understands the effect of surface treatment parameters on the product quality, costs and environment and can modify these
• can plan, calculate and make a coating colour formula keeping in mind the targets of coating, printing method requirements and costs
• comprehends the manufacturing processes of different surface treated products
Content
Raw materials of paper and paper board coating: pigments, binders and additives, and their handling
• Calculating the formula of coating colour based on the requirements on different paper and board grades
• Rheology of coating colour and factors affecting it
• Coated paper and paper board grades products
• Coating kitchen operations
• Different coating and surface sizing methods and their use
• Parameters of base paper, coating method and coating colour and their effects on the coating process
• Drying and calendering of coated paper and paper board grades
• Intelligent products manufactured by surface treatment technologies
