Objectives

The student strengthens and enhances their professional competence in general nursing through clinical training in various areas of nursing, in line with the evolving theoretical knowledge and language skills acquired during their studies.

After completing the training, the student
• knows how to act professionally, ethically, and in a client-centered way
• can work safely for patients/clients in nursing care, promoting health and self-care
• can implement clinical nursing care for patients/clients according to the progress of their studies
• can communicate and collaborate multiprofessionally and participates actively in nursing care
• can guide patients/clients
• knows the principles of documentation and knows how to utilize information technology
• understands the significance of self-management and employee competence skills in nursing
• understands the social and healthcare service system as part of patient's care
• knows how to implement evidence-based nursing care and utilizes research data in decision-making

Content

Orientation to supervised clinical training and supervised clinical training in holistic nursing care.

Prerequisites

The student has completed Supervised Clinical Trainings 1-5 and participated in Supervised Clinical Training 6.
The student has participated in the nursing studies and the Finnish language integration studies required and related to the clinical training area.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass:
The student
• takes responsibility for their own learning and actions
• adheres to nursing laws, ethical guidelines, and principles, acts responsibly as a member of a multidisciplinary team, and follows the guidelines of the workplace and the guidelines set for the training
• is capable of assessing and developing their own skills and knows the limits of their expertise
• values the client/patient and treats them as an expert and active agent in their own life
• is capable of professional nursing interaction with clients/patients and their close ones
• develops documentation skills and can safely utilize information technology
• is able to promote patient safety and prevent adverse events
• can identify health risk factors in clients/patients
• can prioritize tasks and manage their own actions
• is able to receive and provide feedback
• works efficiently and in accordance with the principles of sustainable development
• knows the principles of health promotion and rehabilitative approach
• gains experience as a primary nurse for a patient
• understands the patient's care pathway
• can guide the patient
• masters the principles of infection prevention and acts aseptically
• can implement basic patient care
• is proficient in the knowledge and skills of key procedures required in nursing
• gains experience in monitoring, assessing, and making decisions regarding basic physiological functions and condition of the patient, and can act accordingly as required by the situation
• can safely implement medication and fluid therapy for the patient under supervision
• can utilize reliable learning materials and unit care guidelines, as well as evidence-based and scientific information

Fail:
The student
• does not take responsibility for their own learning and actions
• does not adhere to nursing laws, ethical guidelines, and principles, acts irresponsibly as a member of a multidisciplinary team, does not follow the guidelines of the workplace and the guidelines set for the training (e.g. goals, planned shifts and evaluations are missing, does not adhere to work hours, does not notify absences as agreed, or the required number of hours for the period is not fulfilled)
• is unable to assess and develop their own skills
• does not know the limits of their expertise
• does not value the client/patient or treat them as an expert and active agent in their own life
• is unable to engage in professional nursing interaction with clients/patients and their close ones
• does not improve in documentation skills and is unable to safely utilize information technology
• is unable to promote patient safety and prevent adverse events
• cannot identify health risk factors in clients/patients
• cannot prioritize tasks or manage their own actions
• is unable to receive and provide feedback
• does not work efficiently and in accordance with the principles of sustainable development
• does not know the principles of health promotion and rehabilitative approach
• does not gain experience as a primary nurse for a patient
• does not understand the patient's care pathway
• cannot guide the patient
• does not master the principles of infection prevention and works in non-aseptic manner
• cannot implement basic patient care
• is not proficient in the knowledge and skills of key procedures required in nursing
• is unable to monitor or assess basic physiological functions of the patient, does not understand decision-making, and cannot act accordingly as required by the situation
• cannot safely implement medication and fluid therapy for the patient under supervision, makes mistakes despite guidance, has not completed the medication passport
• cannot utilize reliable learning materials and unit care guidelines or evidence-based and scientific information
• behaves dishonestly during the training

Further information

When selecting supervised clinical placements for clinical trainings 2-9, a student shoud consider the broad and varied placements across different areas of nursing practice in accordance with EU directives. Supervised clinical placements should be conducted with patients of different ages in primary healthcare, specialized healthcare, inpatient units, and outpatient healthcare, ensuring the development of skills in both somatic and mental health and substance abuse care. Supervised clinical placements may be in public or private healthcare or the third sector.
