Objectives

The course provides competence to assess the need for patient care.

After completing the course, the student
• can assess the patient using the ABCDE protocol and provide care for patients of different ages in various situations, in English and in Finnish
• can report on the patient's condition in Finnish language using the ISBAR method
• can respond to emergency situations, considering the needs of patients of different ages and taking into account their close ones
• can act as a member of the healthcare team, lead activities, and make decisions related to care
• can understand the causal relationships resulting from changes in the patient's condition
• can guide in Finnish clients and their close ones in a strength-based approach in matters related to healthcare and well-being
• knows the key concepts and vocabulary of the course in Finnish

Prerequisites

Participation in the course Advancement of Nursing Skills and semesters 1–5 studies.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass
The student
• can act in emergency situations
• can identify and assess factors compromising a patient's well-being and health
• can provide comprehensive patient care
• can communicate with patients and their close ones regarding care and well-being related matters
• can assess essential aspects of a patient's current condition
• can communicate information about the patient's condition and changes in their health status
• can act consistently in different situations
• is capable of active and constructive reflection
• uses Finnish language according to their own language proficiency level

Fail
The student
• their action in emergency situations endangers the patient’s life
• does not recognize life-threatening situations in the patient’s condition
• cannot provide comprehensive patient care
• cannot communicate with patients and their close ones regarding care and well-being related matters
• cannot communicate information about the patient's condition and changes in their health status
• cannot act consistently in different situations
• acts inappropriately in care situation
• is not capable of active and constructive reflection
• does not use the Finnish language according to their own language proficiency level
