After completing this course, student

- knows the main contaminants in soil, groundwater and sediments.
- understands the paths/transport of contaminants in soil and groundwater
- knows the various remediation methods and of contaminated soils and groundwaters
- can design and implement sampling programmes, which gives him/her preparedness to participate different remediation projects

Content

Recapitulation of soil and groundwater contaminants, sampling and analyses. Ex-situ and in-situ remediation, extractive and degradative in-situ remediation techniques, principles of sustainable remediation, field visits and practical work.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Has basic knowledge of the main contaminants in soil, groundwater, and sediments. Understands fundamental concepts of the transport paths of contaminants in soil and groundwater. Familiar with basic remediation methods for contaminated soils and groundwater. Capable of designing and implementing simple sampling programs, showing initial preparedness for participation in remediation projects.

Demonstrates a good understanding of various soil, groundwater, and sediment contaminants. Shows solid knowledge of contaminant transport mechanisms in soil and groundwater. Knows and can effectively describe various remediation methods, both ex-situ and in-situ. Skilled in designing and implementing comprehensive sampling programs, indicating readiness for active involvement in different remediation projects.

Exhibits in-depth knowledge of a wide range of contaminants in soil, groundwater, and sediments. Has a thorough understanding of the paths and transport mechanisms of contaminants. Expertly understands and can propose advanced remediation methods, including extractive and degradative in-situ techniques. Highly proficient in designing and executing complex sampling programs, demonstrating exceptional preparedness for leading roles in remediation projects.
