Objectives

After completing this course, the student

-knows about the major physical, chemical and biological water and wastewater treatment units, such as sedimentation, filtration, coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge, N and P removal, membrane processes, ion exchange, advanced oxidation processes
- can perform mass balance calculations related to the units
- knows various natural wastewater treatment systems and the alternative wastewater management options
- knows how to monitor a pilot wastewater treatment unit an knows how to analyse the samples and report the results

Content

Physical, chemical, and biological unit operations used in water and wastewater treatment, drinking water production, wastewater treatment, and sludge processing, laboratory exercises: wastewater treatment, process monitoring and analysis

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Has basic knowledge of major physical, chemical, and biological water and wastewater treatment units including sedimentation, filtration, and coagulation/flocculation. Can perform simple mass balance calculations related to these units. Understands the fundamentals of natural wastewater treatment systems and alternative wastewater management options. Familiar with the basics of monitoring a pilot wastewater treatment unit, including simple sample analysis and reporting.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Demonstrates good understanding of various water and wastewater treatment units, including activated sludge, N and P removal, and membrane processes. Capably performs accurate mass balance calculations for these units. Has a solid grasp of natural wastewater treatment systems and different wastewater management options. Knows how to monitor a pilot wastewater treatment unit effectively, analyze the samples accurately, and report the results in a detailed manner.

Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of all major water and wastewater treatment units, including advanced oxidation processes and ion exchange. Expertly performs complex mass balance calculations related to these units. Demonstrates in-depth understanding of various natural wastewater treatment systems and advanced alternative wastewater management options. Skilled in monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on a pilot wastewater treatment unit, showcasing high proficiency in process monitoring and analysis.
