Objectives
After completing this course, the student
- knows soil properties, soil formation processes, structure, function and biology of soils
- can take and prepare soil and groundwater samples and can analyse them
- knows the phenomenon of water flow in soils, groundwater formation and basics of hydrology
- knows the major groups of soil and groundwater pollutants
- understands the transport of pollutants in soil and groundwater
Content
Basic geology and soil science; biological and physical processes in soils; environmental impacts of soil utilization; hydrology; movement of water, air and gases in soils, major soil and groundwater contaminants and their transport. Soil and groundwater sampling, field and laboratory measurements
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Has basic knowledge of soil properties, soil formation, and the biology of soils. Can perform simple tasks in taking and preparing soil and groundwater samples for analysis. Understands the fundamental concepts of water flow in soils and groundwater formation. Recognizes major groups of soil and groundwater pollutants and has a basic understanding of pollutant transport in soil and groundwater.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
Demonstrates a good understanding of soil structure, function, and biology. Capably takes and prepares soil and groundwater samples, analyzing them accurately. Shows solid knowledge of hydrology, water flow in soils, and groundwater formation. Understands and can identify major soil and groundwater pollutants and their transport mechanisms.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Exhibits in-depth knowledge of soil properties, formation processes, and soil biology. Expertly conducts soil and groundwater sampling and analysis, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in field and laboratory measurements. Has a comprehensive understanding of hydrology, water, air, and gas movements in soils, and groundwater formation. Thoroughly understands and can analyze the transport of various pollutants in soil and groundwater, demonstrating advanced interpretative skills.
