General information
*******************************
The focus of the international and multicultural Degree Programme in Media and Arts is to provide up to date competences in a continuously changing and growing international media and arts sector. Everything starts from creating a fresh idea and continues with aiming to develop it into high quality product in artistically, technically and economically successful results.
Because the essential media and arts related markets and working environments are global, studying in English with a flexible syllabus and in co-operation with customers, partner companies and institutions in a sustainable and ethical manner is an extremely important starting point for generating new creative economy success stories.
Our solution for meeting these requirements has been organizing the Media and Arts studies into three main study paths:
*Interactive Media study path
*Music Production study path
*Fine Art study path
The structure of the study modules (minors) provides students excellent possibilities to join multidisciplinary research and development projects. Choosing studies across study paths is possible. The curriculum contains also large shared parts and projects between these study paths and other Degree Programmes.
The general aim of the studies is that students become professionals who are able to work as experts, developers and entrepreneurs in the field, both in Finland and abroad.
The other main objectives are that the graduate:
- Is capable of creative and applicable innovations and solutions
- Masters the articulation, working methods and technology of her/his speciality
- Is able to act professionally in the typical communication and interaction situations of the field
- Can design, create and head media and art related productions and act as member of a team
- Has the competence to enter both national and international fields of employment as a professional and as an entrepreneur
The professional studies give the competences required for demanding professional work e.g. in one or more of the following areas of application: game design, 2D- and 3D- modelling, virtual reality, web and app design and services, motion graphics design, user experience design, music production and music business, song writing, sound design, event production, cultural export, entrepreneurship, fine art photography and moving image as well as drawing and painting, animation and applied fine art.

The autumn semester of the first year provides a broad perspective on basic skills needed on each study path. As of the spring semester students have a choice to plan their own study path from a tray of professional studies (30 cr minor modules). In the spring semester the student selects the first minor module of his/her specialization from the minor modules selection. After the first year the student is able to use the essential tools and techniques and has competences from one professional study module.
In the autumn of the second year student continues with professional studies and chooses minor modules (a 30 cr) for autumn and spring semesters. Choosing modules across paths is possible as of year two depending on student’s prerequisites.
In the autumn of the third year the student deepens and broadens the professional insight in her/his specialization in international exchange or chooses the forth minor study module. In the spring semester the syllabus consists of language studies (these are possible to study already in year two), optional professional studies and practical training or studying even more optional professional studies, depending on student’s individual study plan.
The autumn of the fourth year consists of preparing for Thesis work by studying media analysis and research courses, free choice studies or choosing optional parts of a minor modules on top of studying basic research methods. The spring semester consists of the practical training and bachelor’s thesis.
However, above mentioned is just an example and the students have the opportunity to plan their individual study paths with tutor teachers and student counsellor.
Training and Work Placement
*******************************
A student’s internship will last for about five months (30 credits). It is recommended that a student familiarizes him/herself with more than one work task and working place during the internship period. Work placements can be done also in summer and as a part time working during other studies. Each student has a supervising teacher for the internship, and the school and the workplace will jointly agree on the working and learning objectives of a student.
