Objectives (course unit)

After completing the course, the students
1. will be able to use English verbs
2. will be able to use English prepositions
3. will be able to use English articles
4. are more fluent in writing different types of texts in English
5. have gained skills needed to carry out group work in an on-line environment

- Sentence structuring
- Using verbs in different tenses
- Using prepositions
- Using articles
- Using pronouns
- Using adjectives
- Writing different types of texts

Prerequisites (course unit)

Prerequisites: upper secondary school English or equivalent. This is an advanced course on English grammar

Exam schedules

There will be an exam. It will be held in late April/early May.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course grade will consists of an exam as well as mandatory writing assignments. The students will also read a novel (from a list given) and in small groups write an essay of the novel. This will also form a part of the final grade.

The course takes place in Tabula, apart from the exam, which is done on paper. The course consists of 6 material units, mandatory writing tasks and a group work, based on a novel the students must read.

The course begins on the 16th of January 2017. The course consists of 6 material units, which will open on 16.1, 30.1, 13.2,6.3, 20.3 and 3.4.

The course will be taught in English and is also suitable for non-Finnish students.

Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Students:
- are aware that there are differences in style in various writing situations
- write comprehensible texts
- use simple grammatical expressions
- use the most easily available tools, such as free on-line dictionaries
- write an essay about a given novel
- are able to work in groups
- submit all required work

Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Students:
- are able to use suitable styles in most writing situations
- write quite fluent and nearly grammatically correct text
- use various sources to find the suitable terms for their text
- use diverse grammatical expressions mostly flawlessly
- write a literary essay about a given novel
- are able to work in groups
- submit all required work by dead-lines

Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Students:
- are able to use suitable styles in various writing situations
- write fluent and very nearly grammatically correct text
- use various sources to find the suitable terms for their text
- use diverse grammatical expressions nearly flawlessly
- write an in-depth literary essay about a given novel
- are able to work efficiently in groups
- submit all required work by dead-lines
