Objectives (course unit)

Opiskelija kehittyy aktiiviseksi kielenkäyttäjäksi, joka pystyy hankkimaan tietoa ja lukemaan ammattikirjallisuutta englanniksi. Opiskelija osaa käyttää yleis- ja ammattikieleen liittyviä tiedonlähteitä sekä kartuttaa ammatillista sanastoaan. Opiskelija erottaa puhutun ja kirjoitetun englannin kielen tyyli- ja kulttuurieroja ammatillisissa viestintätilanteissa. Opiskelija pystyy keskustelemaan ammatillisista aiheista englanniksi. Opiskelija osaa tuottaa analyyttista ja jäsentynyttä tekstiä englanniksi.

Content (course unit)

Kirjallinen ammatillinen viestintä englanniksi, kuten ammattitekstit ja dokumentit, asiantuntijakirjoitelma, projektisuunnitelma, CV, abstrakti ja akateeminen kirjoittaminen. Suulliset viestintätilanteet, kuten small talk, pitchaus, neuvottelu ja ammatillinen esitelmä.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The students:
- Are able to use English moderately both in professional and personal contexts.
- Are able to obtain information only from a few sources and read basic professional literature.
- Master only some professional terms and phrases.
- Distinguish only some of the differences between spoken and written language as well as various cultures and have difficulties in adapting them.
- Know how to outline the essentials of a text and how to write structured text.
- Submit all required work.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The students:
- Are able to use English fairly well both in professional and personal contexts.
- Are able to obtain information from a fairly good selection of sources and read advanced professional literature.
- Master a fairly good selection of professional terms and phrases.
- Distinguish and are able to adapt most differences between spoken and written language as well as various cultures.
- Know how to outline the essentials of a text and how to write analytical and structured text.
- Submit all required work by dead-lines.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The students:
- Are able to use English fluently both in professional and personal contexts.
- Are able to obtain information from a wide range of sources and read complex professional literature.
- Master a wide range of professional terms and phrases.
- Distinguish and are able to correctly adapt all the differences between spoken and written language as well as various cultures.
- Know how to outline the essentials of a text and how to write academic, analytical and structured text.
- Submit all required work by dead-lines.

Assessment methods and criteria

The grade is based on several course assignments. The assignments consist of numerically (0-5) and pass/fail assessed tasks, as well as class participation. The course objectives, schedule, and program are introduced during the first lesson.

Class participation means participating in activities during lessons. Absences therefore affect the grade. Absences cannot be compensated with other tasks.
