Objectives

On this course, students will be familiarized with safe medication administration. Completing this course will provide students with the readiness to engage safely in medication management within the responsibilities of a dental hygienist.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
• Understand the legislation guiding medication administration.
• Explain how to safely administer medications.
• Outline the main stages of medication management process.
• Understand the basics of different medication forms and routes of administration.
• Administer injections subcutaneously and intramuscularly safely.
• Understand the fundamentals of medication phases and their effects on the body.
• Have knowledge of the basics of drug interactions.
• Perform medication calculations accurately.

Student:
• lists the most significant aspects of legislation governing medication therapy.
• knows the key factors affecting medication safety.
• understands the main stages of the medication therapy process.
• is aware of the basic principles of different medication forms and routes of administration.
• is able to administer injections safely into subcutaneous tissue and muscle.
• understands the fundamental aspects of medication phases and their effects on the body.
• knows the essential basics of drug interactions.
• can correctly calculate medication dosages.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student:
• knows the legislation governing medication therapy.
• explains how to operate safely in medication therapy.
• outlines the main stages of the medication therapy process.
• understands the basics of medication forms and routes of administration.
• administers injections into subcutaneous tissue and muscle safely.
• understands the fundamentals of medication phases and their effects on the body.
• knows the basics of drug interactions.
• calculates medication dosages accurately.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to a good level of proficiency, the student demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the learning objectives of the course by explaining and justifying their knowledge and actions.
