Objectives

This course provides an overview of specialties in dentistry. Completing the course equips students to work in tasks within the responsibility area of dental hygienists in specialized fields of oral healthcare.

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
• Identify common oral and maxillofacial surgical and periodontal surgical procedures.
• Explain pre-, peri-, and postoperative care in oral surgical procedures.
• Recognize mucosal changes requiring treatment and refer patients for further care, explaining findings to the patient.
• Maintain oral health in patients receiving head and neck radiation therapy.
• Master clinical photography and its documentation.
• Familiarize oneself with specialties in dentistry and specialized treatment processes.
• Get acquainted with health and well-being technology in oral health care work.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery and periodontal surgery
Pre-, peri-, and postoperative oral surgical nursing

Assessment criteria, pass/fail
