Objectives (course unit)

The student:
- knows the raw material sources of forest industry and the different levels of wood supply delivery planning
- understands how plans made on different levels affect the process of wood supply/wood procurement
- understands the possibilities of digitalization in wood supply
- knows how to make operational plans and resource calculations for wood supply
- understands the importance of monitoring and measurement operations, and knows how to apply indicators in operational management and in managing changes (e.g. international forest certification)
- knows how to make a cut-to-length file and test its effectiveness
- knows how different methods of timber storage affect the quality of wood
- knows the types of services linked with timber trade provided to forest owners by different organisations

Content (course unit)

The forest industry's raw material sources and their characteristics, the different levels of wood supply logistics planning, mathematics (simulation, optimisation), wood supply objectives calculation, resource calculation, operational plans for the purchase, harvesting and transport, e-business in wood purchase, entrepreneurs it-systems, operations measuring instruments and their principles, the role of reserves and stocks in the wood supply chain, making and testing optimised cut-to-length files, different storage methods and their impact on quality, timber trade support services, forest certification as a supportive tool for wood supply

Prerequisites (course unit)

Opintojaksolle pääsy edellyttää, että opiskelijalla on opintojakson alkaessa vähintään 150 opintopistettä suoritettuna perus- ja ammattiopintoja ja vapaasti valittavia opintoja. Harjoittelun opintopisteitä ei oteta huomioon.

The student knows the stages of Finnish wood procurement and their essential characteristics.
He / she can make plans for different stages of wood procurement.
He/ she knows how wood procurement objectives are formed

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student knows the phases of Finnish wood procurement and their characteristics, as well as the challenges that cause the need for guidance.
He/ she is able to make plans for the various stages of wood procurement and use the gauges to assess their usefulness.
He/ sheknows how wood procurement objectives are formed and from which sources wood is obtained.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student knows the phases of Finnish wood procurement and their characteristics, the challenges that need to be controlled and the areas for development, as well as recent development solutions.
He/ she is able to make plans for the various phases of wood procurement, measure the usability of the plans with the help of indicators and modify the plans in the event of changes.
He / she knows the role of different sources of supply as part of wood procurement as a whole and how different sources of supply are taken into account in setting objectives.
The student is aware of the potential of digitalisation and knows its importance in the development of operations.
