Textile Manufacturing Processes in Circular Economy (5 cr)

Objectives (course unit)

Student
- can look at manufacturing processes as a whole
- knows how to take the circular economy and sustainable development goals into account when planning the value chain
- knows how to look at the modernization of manufacturing methods to the circular economy

Content (course unit)

- textile manufacturing processes from fibers to finished products (production of non-woven fabrics, yarn, knitted and woven fabrics and clothes) in circular economy
- possibilities and limitations of the circular economy in various manufacturing processes
- the effect of the manufacturing processes on the recyclability of the material
- utilization of recycled materials and manufacturing

Core questions:
- What is the significance of manufacturing process in the circular economy?
- What should be taken into account in the design of the value chain according to the principles of the circular economy?
- What are the tools to develop the production process in accordance with the principles of the circular economy?

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

KNOWING
Identify key concepts and understand the most common manufacturing processes.
MAKING
Participates in activities and performs assigned tasks according to instructions. Gather information.
BEING
Identifies own communication skills. Can act responsibly both independently and as a team member. Can give and receive feedback. Considers the own decisions both for the own perspective and for the team.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

KNOWING
Can structure the impact of the various actors of manufacturing processes on the end-product from the point of view of the circular economy. Explains and compares alternative solutions. Organizes things in relation to each other.
MAKING
Acquires new information. Apply the previous knowledge. Presents justified solution options.
BEING
Develops own interaction skills. Can give and receive feedback actively and interactively (throughout the process). Tests the solutions also from the point of view of the different players in the textile and fashion industry value chain.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

KNOWING
Broadly understands the various manufacturing processes in terms of the circular economy in product design and process development. Critically evaluates the usefulness of the measures taken.
MAKING
Can bring own versatile skills to common use. Tests new operating models and approaches. Creatively combines the positive sides of different solution options.
BEING
Develops new, creative solutions. Systematically uses feedback as a tool for personal and community professional growth. Tests and evaluates solutions in terms of the overall circular economy of the textile and fashion industry, taking into account the different effects.
