Objectives (course unit)

Student:
- Increases his/her cultural understanding
- Identifies his/her strengths, abilities and areas of improvement in multicultural interaction
- Improves his/her communicational and teamwork skills in multicultural environment
- Is able to act professionally in multicultural working environment
- Is able to plan projects together with students from various fields
- Is able to plan projects considering the specific conditions regarding asylum seekers/refugees
- Improves his/her language skills

Content (course unit)

- Participating in the volunteer training
- Watching and writing a report of The unknown refugee documentary (or a similar documentary film)
- Alternatively reading an asylum seeker/refugee related book and writing a book report
- Planning and implementing a project together with asylum seekers/refugees
- Keeping track of volunteer work hours
- Writing a learning diary
- Participating in a reflection session

Assessment methods and criteria

Mandatory participation in Volunteer training (or watching the lectures in Tabula).
The students watch and write a report of refugee related documentary film or alternatively read a refugee related book and write a book report.
The students form a group of 3-4 students and plan a project of activities conserning asylum seekers and refugees. The student group implement their project with asylum seekers and refugees. The students will inform the coordinating techer about their plans of activities and as they have fulfilled the required contact hours with the asylum seekers/refugees.
The student will keep tarck of his/her work hours and write a learning diary.
Mandatory participation in the relection session at the end of the course.

Student workload

Project with asylum seekers and refugees -course (2 cr) is equivalent of 54 hrs of students' work.

The total of 54 hours includes:
30 hrs: Contact hours with asylum seekers and refugees
24 hours:
Participating in volunteer training
Watching the documentary and writing a report (alternative choice: reading a book and writing a book report)
Planning of the project within small groups
Writing of the learning diary
Participating in reflection session

Project will be implemented together with Volunteer Organizations.

Further information

The students are encouraged to contact suitable partners and form small groups (3-4 (5) people) by themselves. Students meet together and plan the activity and implement the planned project together with asylum seekers and regugees.
Prior to above each student has to enroll themselves to the Volunteer training session kept in TAMK 31.3.16. The enrollment to the training session will be done via the separate enrollment form (https://lomake.tamk.fi/v3/lomakkeet/21000/lomake.html)in order to book suitable space for the training.
As the students form the project groups keep in mind the cultural requirements conserning the group of asylum seekers/refugees you are working with. Reception centers for men only will require a group of students consisting of both genders.
The students have to participate in the reflection session at the end of the course.

The implementation plan of the course is subject to change.

Assessment criteria - pass/fail (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

The student has increased his/her cultural understanding and improved his/her skills in multicultural interaction and can act professionally in multicultural working environment.
The student can participate in the group project as a team member in multicultural environment. The student has the ability to plan and implement the project planned by the project group considering the specific conditions regarding asylum seekers/refugees

In order to pass the course the student must participate in the mandatory Volunteer training and Reflection session.
The student must complete the volunteer work hours including contact hrs with the asylum seekers/refugees and other required tasks as per content of the course.
