Objectives (course unit)

The student

-knows the basics of intravenous fluid therapy and medication;
-is able to assess patients' fluid balance;
-is able to responsibly insert intravenous cannula under supervision;
-knows the principles of blood transfusion;
-is able to guide patients with issues concerning implementation of fluid therapy and blood transfusions.

Assessment methods and criteria

Theory exam: Numeric evaluation, requires 70% of points for the lowest approved grade, active participation in teaching.
Finnish Red Cross: ABO- web course exam: passed/failed.
Skills stations: practical test: approved performance.

Theoretical classes before skills stations. Course completion requires the attendance of theory classes. Absences affect the ability to participate in skills stations and the exam. Any absences must be agreed by the teacher.

Orientation and skills stations 100% attendance.

- adding medication to an infusion and preparing an infusion
- iv cannulation
- iv solutions and blood products
- administration of blood products
- aseptic techniques in iv therapy and blood transfusions
- patient guidance in iv therapy and blood transfusion

Student:
- knows the basic aspects of iv fluid and iv medication therapy
- knows the basic aspects of blood transfusion
- knows the basic aspects of safe administration of iv- medication
- knows the basic aspects of monitoring the patient and of implementing iv fluid
therapy and blood transfusion
- knows the different infusion solutions and their use
- performs controlled iv- cannulation
- performs controlled providing guidance on the implementing iv fluid theraphy and blood
transfusion

Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Student:
- is able to describe the basic aspects of iv fluid and iv medication therapy in various nursing care environments
- is able to implement patient´s blood transfusion
- is able to mix medication into the fluids and dilutions of drugs safety
- is able to monitor the effects of patient's iv fluid therapy and bloos transfusion
- is able to perform iv-cannulation responsibly in guidance
- is able to provide guidance on iv fluid therapy and blood transfusion in guidance

Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

Student:
- understands the basic aspects of iv fluid and iv medication therapy in various nursing care environments
- understands the basic aspects of blood transfusion
- understands the meaning of various mixed medications and dilutions of drugs in nursing care
- is able to to draw conclusions about the implementation of the patient's iv fluid therapy and blood tarnsfusion
