Design of Microcontroller Controlled DevicesLaajuus (5 cr)

Code: 5G00EV12

Credits

5 op

Objectives

The student identifies the key components and structures of embedded microcontroller systems from an electronics design perspective.

The student is able to design a simple printed circuit board and select suitable components for it.

The student understands the basics of enclosure and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design.

The student is able to implement a simple electronic device that includes a self-designed printed circuit board and housing.

Content

The course introduces the basic components and structures of embedded microcontroller systems from an electronics design perspective. It covers the basics of circuit board design and packaging, as well as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design principles. Students design and implement a simple electronic device that includes a self-designed circuit board and packaging.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
recognizes basic components and knows how to implement a given circuit board
understands the importance of encapsulation and EMC design, but the application is partial
the exercise is functional but requires development in terms of design or implementation

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

In addition to the above, the student
can design a simple circuit board and make justified component choices
considers enclosure and EMC aspects in the design
the exercise is technically functional and documented in an understandable way

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student
demonstrates strong overall control in the design and implementation of the printed circuit board and housing
applies the principles of EMC design appropriately and with justification
the exercise work is completed, well documented and of technical quality

Teaching methods

The course focuses on project-based device design, where the primary objective is to develop a microcontroller-controlled circuit board or device. Throughout the course, students will engage in designing, building, and testing a functional circuit board or device, with control provided by a microcontroller. This hands-on course offers a comprehensive understanding of the device design process, including component selection, circuit diagram design, PCB manufacturing, and programming. The ultimate goal is for each student or student group to create a working prototype that demonstrates the skills acquired during the course.
