Objectives

The aim of the course is to develop basic knowledge of the paperboard and paper manufacturing process.

Upon completion of the course, the student will:
• know the processes of paperboard and paper manufacturing
• know their impact on the quality, cost and environment of the final product
• know the potential of paperboard and paper manufacturing in the circular economy.

Content

• Grades of board and paper and their characteristics
• Unit solutions and processes in board and paper production: pulping, grinding, water cycles, head box, wire section, press section, drying, calendering, reeling, winding, wastepaper handling, packaging and sheeting
• Role of the circular economy

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student is able to name the sub-processes, equipment and their main functions in paperboard and paper manufacturing and to define the issues affecting product quality in different parts of the process.
The student will perform the given tasks under supervision/assistance.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student will explain the differences between the different manufacturing processes of paperboard and paper and be able to compare the technical differences between the different manufacturing processes.
The student will be able to select the optimal manufacturing process for different types of board and paper.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students will be able to analyse how different types of manufacturing processes affect product quality, costs and the environment. The student will be able to describe and justify the optimal manufacturing process for different types of board and paper.
The student will be able to evaluate different solution options for the different stages of paperboard and paper production.
