Description
The title of the students graduating from Degree Programme in Laboratory Sciences is Bachelor of Laboratory Services. The scope of the Degree Programme in Laboratory Sciences is 210 credits and the education lasts for 3,5 years.
COMPETENCES DEVELOPED
The Degree Programme in Laboratory Sciences provides the students with extensive basic knowledge and skills in natural sciences and the ability to develop into experts in the field after graduation. The education provides the students with the ability to continuously develop their own expertise. The education emphasises initiative, independent planning, teamwork and cooperative skills and working as well as mastery and development of analytical methods. Those working in the field of laboratory sciences have to manage entities and have good problem solving skills. In addition, they should be aware of the meaning of quality systems and their environmental responsibilities.
PROFESSIONAL STATUS
The graduated can work in the demanding analysis tasks in the laboratories of industry and research institutes, including pharmaceutical, food processing, wood processing and chemical industries, as well as environmental and bioscience research laboratories. The work tasks include e.g. research, product development and quality control tasks.
BASIC VALUES
The basic values of the degree programme are professionalism and responsibility at work, high quality and reliability of laboratory tests, and promotion of human and environmental well-being.
Curriculum development and working life cooperation
The starting point for this syllabus was the revised syllabus of Degree Programme in Laboratory Sciences from year 2005. The new syllabus is based on broad working life and alumni surveys, that were performed to gain information on the competence needs and experiences of laboratory professionals.
The syllabus work was done in collaboration with both the companies and other operators working in the field of laboratory sciences and other Universities of Applied Scciences that offer Laboratory Science education. Based on these, the new syllabus contains increased amount of project based, multidisciplinary work. Distinct annual themes for each study year have also been selected.
The aim of the study programme is to offer quality education that is based on the needs of the working life, and supports the graduation and employment of the students. Our goal is a strong laboratory competence that addresses future challenges. In the center of this competence are management of entities, problem-solving skills and "flexible multi-skilling".
Laboratory science is a fast-developing field where both chemical and biotechnological expertise is needed. The challenge is that the competence acquired through education needs to sufficiently respond to the needs of various operators in the field. New innovations need to be brought up, for example in the fields of biotechnology, nanotechnology and well-being technology. Future focus areas also include environmental monitoring, new manufacturing technologies that reduce environmental load and new materials and energy sources. These focus areas are also centrally linked with TAMK strategy.

IMPLEMENTATION OF TEACHING
The studies consist of theory, practical exercises in the laboratory and different project tasks, as well as supervised practical training. The studies develop independent work approach and management of information systems and information search. The aim of study guidance is to develop the investigative work approach in learning environments resembling working life laboratories.
Students create contacts to working life by means of diverse projects and practical training as well as by writing a working-life-oriented bachelor´s thesis. As the field of laboratory sciences becomes more and more international, the graduated must have good oral and written language skills and diversified communication skills especially in English. Most of the courses use textbooks written in English and the language studies are integrated into professional studies. Also courses taught in English are offered to the students and visiting lecturers from foreign universities take part in teaching the courses. Students are able to do part of their studies in international student exchange.
The studies are divided to annual themes and each study year further into two study modules. Collaborative project studies with students from other degree programmes create working life competencies.
During the second and third year the student can deepen their competence in the special field of laboratory science they have chosen. Each student chooses one orientative module of studies from the supply of his/her own degree programme and in addition some studies worth of a module from the supply of any degree programme according to his/her own interest.
Some of the study modules are shared with other degrees or they can be incorporated with studies accomplished in international student exchange or working life projects.
ANNUAL THEMES
After the first year, students can act in the learning and operating environments of the university of applied sciences and know their degree programme and future profession. Students can use their communication and information search skills as well as mathematical and natural scientific knowledge and skills as basis for the professional studies. Students are able to work safely in laboratory according to the given instructions and perform simple titrimetric, gravimetric and spectrometric analyses under supervision.
After the second year, students have familiarised themselves with the most common biochemical, microbiological, synthetical and chemical analysis methods and are able to use the most common analytical instruments. Students can apply their knowledge and skills in working life.
After the third year, students are able to work in the laboratory as a member of a project team and independently execute, design and develop laboratory analyses using demanding chemical and biotechnological methods. Students have deepened their competence in the special fields of laboratory science they have chosen.
After 3,5 years of study the student is able to apply his/her knowledge and skills in working life, design and execute a working life research and development project and report the project in the form of a thesis. Student's investigative work approach has developed. Student is able to critically assess research information.
