The ICT field develops quickly, which means that employees of the field must be able to constantly develop themselves. The degree programme is based on the students’ willingness and capability to develop themselves in an open and stimulating learning environment. The students gain a good basic ICT training, which forms the basis of self-development in the careers the students have chosen. The students use the latest software products and powerful data communication connections. The students may also complete a part of their studies and practical training abroad. The studying in the degree programme is based the companies’ requirements of ICT and its use. This viewpoint directs the contents of the degree programme, the teaching methods and the collaboration with the business life. The developing field and directing the studies to meet the requirements of the business life offer the graduating students good employment prospects.

The scope of the studies is 210 credits (cr). The degree consists of basic studies (60 cr), professional studies (90 cr), free-choice studies (15 cr), practical training (30 cr) and Bachelor’s thesis (15 cr).

BASIC STUDIES, 60 cr

The aim of the basic studies to provide the students with an extensive concept on what the position and meaning of business information systems and business administration have in society, working life and internationally, to familiarize the students with the general theoretic principles and communication skills of ICT and business and to provide the students with the language skills defined in the decree 256/95 8 §. The basic studies must be completed within the first two years of studies. The students follow the curriculum (OPS) of their own starting year and use it to plan and get their own individual study plan (HOPS) accepted. If the course mentioned in the curriculum of said year is no longer offered, the students must get the changes in their HOPS approved by a representative of the degree programme.

PROFESSIONAL STUDIES, 90 cr

The aim of the professional studies is to familiarize the students with the central problem areas and applications of business administration and business information systems and their scientific bases. After having graduated, the students are able to independently work as experts, developers and entrepreneurs of their field. The professional studies consist of mandatory studies (55 cr), alternative business information system studies (20 cr) and other professional studies (15 cr). The students must select at least 70 credits worth of business information system studies in order to graduate from the Degree Programme in Business Information Systems. The final 20 credits can be selected from the professional studies of business information systems or other degree programmes.

FREE-CHOICE STUDIES, 15 cr

The aim of free-choice studies is to offer the students a chance to study other topics which interest them in addition to business information systems and business administration. The students may select 15 credits worth of university level studies from the courses offered by TAMK or other education providers. The students may take free-choice studies at any point during their studies.

PRACTICAL TRAINING, 30 cr

The aim of the practical training is to offer a structured familiarisation to practical job tasks, especially regarding professional studies as well as an introduction to the application of knowledge and skills into the working life. Another goal is for the students to gain information, skills and experience from their chosen field of study and working life. Practical training combines theory with practice and offers a realistic view on the demands of the field. One of the aims of the practical training is to facilitate employment after graduation. An adult student, who works in ICT during their studies, may complete practical training by writing a self-evaluation report. The prerequisite for completing practical training as self-evaluation is to have the student work in the field of ICT doing tasks which are related to their field of study and which are as demanding as the tasks normally given to Bachelors of Business Administration. For more information about practical training, see the degree programme instructions in TAMK intranet.

BACHELOR’S THESIS, 15 cr

In the Bachelor’s thesis, the students develop and show their readiness to apply their skills and knowledge in a demanding practical task related to their professional studies. The students usually find the topic for their Bachelor’s thesis themselves. When the students are ready to submit their Bachelor’s thesis, they must also take the maturity test. Bachelor’s theses can also be carried out as group projects. The Bachelor’s thesis may also be multidisciplinary, which means that students from different degree programmes may be part of the group.
