Description

Graduates of the Degree Programme in Midwifery are experts of sexual and reproductive health as well as nursing. They can support people of different ages in maintaining and promoting their health and wellbeing and treat ill people in a holistic and evidence-based manner. Their task is to promote health and wellbeing of women during planning for pregnancy, during pregnancy and risk pregnancy and during and after childbirth, newborn babies and whole families in the changing multicultural society. Their core competence includes gynaecological nursing and health promotion of women of all ages. High-quality midwifery is based on strong theoretical knowledge, ethical competence and manual skills which are achieved during the long clinical training periods. They can work in diverse tasks of primary health care, special health care and third sector as well as independent professionals. Midwifery professionals can work in different planning and development tasks. The programme also enables work in international tasks.

The extent of the Degree Programme in Midwifery is 270 credits and it takes 4.5 years to complete it. Students complete both nursing and midwifery degrees. During the first 2.5 years the focus is on completing the nursing studies and the professional studies in midwifery are completed during the last two years. Midwifery competence is determined nationally and internationally. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health certifies the graduates as registered nurses and midwives in accordance with the Act on Health Care Professionals (559/94). TAMK’s Degree Programme in Midwifery fulfils the minimum requirements of EU directives (2005/35/EY and 2013/55/EU) on recognition of professional qualifications of registered nurses and midwives. International Confederation of Midwives’ (ICM) and WHO’s recommendations are also taken into consideration. TAMK’s midwifery and nursing degrees are comparable with equivalent degrees in other EU countries in accordance with the directive (2013/55/EU).

Professional midwifery competence is based on scientific evidence. Midwifery has its knowledge basis supported by other fields of sciences, such as nursing science, medicine, natural sciences, social sciences and behavioural sciences. Midwifery professionals’ professional ethics are based on human dignity, view of human beings and consideration of clients’ rights. The principles of holistic nursing guide midwifery. Midwifery is based on the principles of self-determination, equality, individualism, health centredness, responsibility, safety, continuity, family centredness and independent initiative. Midwifery is guided by international ethical guidelines on midwifery. Learning midwifery is both reflective, critical and ethical assessment of prior information and practices, discovery and consideration of personal attitudes.

Professional midwifery competence is built on the competence requirements of general nursing. The competence requirements are determined on the national and European level and consist of professionalism and ethicality, communication and client orientation, multiprofessionalism, health promotion, management and employee skills, information technology and registration, supervision and teaching competence, support of self-care, clinical nursing, evidence-based nursing, use of research information, decision-making, entrepreneurship and development, quality assurance, social and health care service system and patient and client safety.

In addition to the above-mentioned competence areas, TAMK’s nursing studies include genomic competence, individualised nursing competence, digital communication skills, use of digital solutions in nursing, wellbeing technology competence and principles of service professions. Students identify and can use sustainable development principles in their profession.

Contents and progress of studies:

The Degree Programme in Midwifery is implemented as full-time studies conducted in Finnish. Some studies may take place in English. The strong nursing competence needed for midwifery competence is built during the first five semesters. Thereafter the studies focus on midwifery competence.

After the first semester, students can the basics of nursing ill people. Students know how to follow health care legislation and ethical guidelines on nursing in their work. Students can identify and predict health problems in individuals and communities and know basics of genomics. Students can monitor patients’ vital functions, identify patients’ needs for nursing and use appropriate nursing methods safely. Students can implement pharmacotherapy safely and master medical calculations. Students can consider different cultures in nursing.

During the second semester, students learn holistic internal nursing, during the third semester they learn surgical and perioperative nursing, in the fourth semester they focus on family nursing and in the fifth semester on nursing in changing health care environments, such as mental health and substance abuse nursing. During the nursing studies, midwifery students complete nine clinical trainings in different fields of nursing. During this time, students develop their clinical competence in different fields of nursing and can determine nursing needs of clients of different ages as well as plan, implement and assess nursing in cooperation with clients and their close relatives. Students can guide and support clients in self-care and utilise user-centred wellbeing technology. Students can work as representatives of nursing in multiprofessional cooperation for the benefit of clients.

The professional studies in midwifery consisting of Basics of Midwifery, Midwifery Competence and Development of Midwifery are based on the general nursing studies. The midwifery competence includes midwifery before and during pregnancy, midwifery during childbirth, gynaecological nursing, midwifery during risk pregnancy and midwifery after childbirth. Students can make ethical and evidence-based decisions and work professionally. Students can develop midwifery and their work responsibly. Students deepen their midwifery competence during the bachelor’s thesis and development project. Midwifery students complete nine clinical trainings during which they focus on all fields of midwifery. There are 18 periods of clinical training (112 credits) in genuine client contacts during the 4.5 years.

After the sixth semester, students can guide families planning for pregnancy, monitor the pregnancy with different methods and guide the pregnant family in physical changes and growth into parenthood. Students can implement midwifery during and after childbirth under supervision. Students can monitor, guide and treat mothers and newborn babies and support families in the changes after the childbirth.

After the seventh and eights semesters, students can take care of regular childbirths and work effectively in changing situations. They can implement family-centred midwifery in risk pregnancies. They can identify deviances during pregnancy and childbirth and treat them together with professionals of different fields. Students can support and guide women of different ages and families in promotion of sexual and reproductive health. Students deepen their competence in gynaecological nursing.

During the last half a year, students’ competence is strengthened in all fields of midwifery and they can anticipate, plan and implement midwifery. They can independently solve problems, make decisions and demonstrate critical and developing thinking in midwifery.

The Degree Programme in Midwifery includes 5 credits of free-choice studies. Students can complete cross-institutional studies. Students are encouraged to participate in sexual and reproductive health promotion projects during their studies.

The following principles are followed in completing the studies:

Students have to complete 30 credits of first- and second-semester studies before the third semester. The studies have to include pharmacotherapy and medical calculations. Students have to participate in the courses Prevention of Infections, Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations and Basics of Clinical Nursing before the second clinical training.

Students have to pass the courses Prevention of Infections, Pharmacotherapy and Medical Calculations and Basics of Clinical Nursing before the third clinical training. Students also have to participate in a nursing course in a training environment before the clinical trainings 3-9.

Students have to complete clinical trainings 1-7 and the theoretical nursing studies before starting the professional studies in midwifery in the sixth semester.

Internationalisation

Students can deepen their competence by participating in English-language teaching, international exchange or other international studies. Students can also complete their clinical trainings in international exchange.
