Objectives (course unit)

Having completed work on this module, students will have a basic knowledge of the target language. In particular, students will
- be able to interact with customers in the target language.
- have a positive attitude towards native speakers of the
target language, and know how to communicate with them
in a culturally appropriate manner.
- be able to build on the skills acquired in this module, so as
to develop further their skills in the target language.

Aqcuired level of competence: A1-A2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

Content (course unit)

The basic level language study modules provide students with natural and realistic communicative practice in work-related situations. The situations will vary according to the special characteristics of the target language. The principal
topics and functions include e.g.:
? describing one?s educational background, work experience
? giving information about one?s company
? communicating with customers

Prerequisites (course unit)

Prerequisites: This module is aimed at students who have studied the target language for three years. This corresponds approximately to the standard reached in a ?short language course? in a Finnish high school.

Exam schedules

Mid-term test, final tests (oral and written) and progressive assessment throughout the course.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Scale 0-5
The grade will be determined by testing, completion of assigned tasks and projects and active participation in classroom activities.
Attendance Requirement: The student has to be present at least 80% of the lessons.

Classroom teaching, presentations, discussions, cooperative and collaborative learning, independent online learning, pair and group work.

The course is designed for students who have completed 5 credits or equivalent studies in the past.

Assessment criteria - satisfactory (1-2) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

The student understands simple oral and written messages, and knows how to deliver them to the recipient. Speaking and writing with regard to the level of structures and pronunciation are adequate. The student can demonstrate what he/she has learned in simple communication situations. The student applies the language in work situations using mostly basic vocabulary. The student can ask for information about the product and company and communicate on the phone using simple structures.

Assessment criteria - good (3-4) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

The student often understands oral and written messages, and knows how to deliver them to the recipient. Speaking and writing with regard to structures and pronunciation are at a good level. The student has the ability to apply what he/she has learned in familiar and varied communication situations. The student knows fairly well the usual speech situations, typical vocabulary and working life terminology. The student can ask for information about the product and company and communicate on the phone using structures typical of the target language.

Assessment criteria - excellent (5) (Not in use, Look at the Assessment criteria above)

The student understands the structure and content of the most demanding oral and written messages and is able to convey them successfully to the recipient. Speaking and writing with regard to structures and pronunciation are of a very good level. The student is able to apply what he/she has learned in new, diverse language situations. The student masters the language in work situations using extensive vocabulary and working life terminology. The student can ask for information about the product and company and communicate on the phone using a good range of structures typical of the target language.
