Objectives
The students learn the various paper and board production unit processes and their effect on paper or board quality. The students know paper and board grades. The students can see the future possibilities of new technologies and products.
The students will gain the basic facts of forestry in Finland. They learn about the history of Finnish forestry as well as the forestry and paper production in Finland and abroad. The students understand the meaning of forestry for Finland’s national economy.
The students gain the basic skills needed to develop professionally in the paper industry.
Content
Fibre raw materials used in paper and board production. Other raw materials, such as fillers, glues and other chemicals. Production of pulp, mechanical and recycled pulp; subprocesses of making paper and board: stock preparation, formation of web, pressing, drying, coating, calendering, finishing. Clothing of the paper machine. Converting and printing of paper and board. Classification of paper and board and identification methods. Future products of paper industry.
Finnish forest resources and ownership, diverse use of forests, forest politics, forest legislation, silviculture, wood trade and wood procurement. Forestry in Finland and Europe, production processes of plywood and sawing, chemical forestry industries on Finland and their units abroad, the world’s largest forestry companies, paper and board production capacity and demand estimations in Finland, Europe and elsewhere. The significance of forestry to the Finnish national economy.
