Objective of course:
The student
- has the basic knowledge in perioperative nursing and is able to implement holistic nursing in the pre-, intra- and postoperative phases
- is able to work in aseptically taking into consideration the infection control practices in perioperative nursing
- knows the most common surgical, gynaecological and cancer diseases
- understands the individual meanings of changes caused by surgical, gynaecological and cancer diseases in patients´ life
- is able to cooperate with different patients
- follows the legislation concerning patients´ rights and is able to apply the ethical and multicultural principles of nursing in clinical settings
- is able to apply rehabilitation principles in perioperative nursing
- is able to support and promote health, functional ability and resources of patients and their families
- is able to educate patients and their families in different phases of perioperative nursing
- is able to justify their action and adopts the principle of evidence based nursing in different phases of perioperative nursing
- is able to assess the need for nursing and plan, implement, evaluate and document nursing in cooperation with surgical patients, relatives and different professional groups
- masters the monitoring and supporting of basic vital functions in surgical patient care and understands cause and effect relations in nursing
- masters medical calculation and safe pharmacological treatment of surgical patients
- knows the most common medical examinations and nursing procedures in perioperative nursing

Course contents:
The most common surgical, gynaecological and cancer diseases
Falling ill and care path
Pre-, intra- and postoperative nursing of surgical patients
Legislation and ethical guidelines
Patient education, rehabilitation and health promotion
Monitoring and supporting of the vital functions of surgical patients
Basic nursing interventions
Medication and intravenous and blood transfusion
Infection control

Teaching methods:
Lectures, group work, tutorials, assignments, supervised independent learning, virtual study, orientation to clinical training, supervised clinical training, seminar, study visits, clinics

Assessment methods:
Examinations, assignments, evaluation given by the teacher and supervisor, self-evaluation, peer review, skills test

Prerequisites:
First-year studies,
Before entering the second year studies 50 credits of first year studies should be completed. These 50 credits should include 3 credits of pharmacology treatment and medical calculation.
