Objectives

The students knows the importance of wood trade for forest industry and for wood procurement. Students understand the basics of the nature and watercourses protection.Students are able to identify possible key habitats. The students are able to make basic plans for wood procurement, understand the pricing of timber and understand the importance of wood trade. Students learn to estimate the volumes of all timber assortments for different stands, make a harvesting plan, where goals for successful harvesting, storing sites, measuring, transportation and nature are taken into count. Students knows the special features of peatlands. Students also knows how draining of peatlands has to be taken into count in logging, in harvesting and in wood trade. Students also learn to evaluate what was the actual result
of the work afterwards.

Content

Forest legislation, laws concerning wood trade and nature protection, forest certification, plans for wood procurement, wood trade, pricing of timber, nature protection in commercial forests, key habitats, nature protection in harvesting, assessing of quality of harvesting operations, estimation of volumes of all timber assortments for different stands, planning of logging site, safety and ergonomics of logging, use of geographical information systems in wood procurement, special features of harvesting on peatlands, draining of peatlands and watershed management.
