Description

BASIC VALUES OF CONSTRUCTION
The guidelines for the field of construction are life cycle thinking, ecology and sustainable development. Constructed environment is significant for peoples’ well-being, the economical and social development of society and the quality of living surroundings. The goals for the design, construction and maintenance of buildings are healthiness, safety, functionality and high quality. The construction business emphasises customer orientation, economic efficiency, entrepreneurship and healthy competition.
DESCRIPTION
Two thirds of our national heritage is tied to buildings or urban structures. The construction business employs directly or indirectly approximately 25% of Finland’s work force. The construction solutions affect everybody’s living and business conditions for generations to come, which means that the field is closely monitored by the public and the policies, and it is under extensive legislation.
STRUCTURE OF STUDIES
The studies consist of basic and professional studies, free-choice studies, practical training and Bachelor’s thesis. The basic studies are carried out together with the professional studies so that they seamlessly support the training for the tasks of a building engineer. The studies are implemented in close collaboration with building site implementations, with an especial emphasis on the practical skills needed in building site management. In addition to construction technology, the education focuses on management training and leadership, diverse work planning as a whole (scheduling, quality, occupational safety, ICT, costs, task plans etc.) as well as managing a project on-site and on-site technology. Some of the studies are carried out in collaboration with businesses of the field as project studies, practical training and Bachelor’s theses.
Construction consists of house building, infrastructure i.e. civil and environmental construction as well as building use and maintenance. House building consists of the building and renovation of e.g. living, business and industrial buildings. Infrastructure construction consists of environmental technology and the building and maintenance of traffic and water supply networks, bridges, harbours etc. There has been a strong shift towards renovation and maintenance and the development seems to continue on the same track.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A construction project requires seamless collaboration between the various parties involved. In many tasks, the prerequisite for coping is combining economical thinking with technical expertise. Success in the field requires customer-based operation methods and service mentality, as well as applying ICT. In addition to mathematics and science, the working life requires management, relationship, communication and negotiation skills, as well as value competence. The participation in international and multicultural projects requires strong and vast expertise, language skills as well as knowledge of different cultures and the ability to work in diverse environments.
AIMS OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME
The Degree Programme of Construction Management aims for practical management tasks of the construction field. The degree gives the graduates the qualifications to work as the site supervisor in charge as defined in the Land Use and Building Act.
