Objectives
The students understand the social functions of journalism and are able to critically evaluate journalism. The students become familiar with the journalistic working process and photojournalism and gain skills to work as journalists. The students know the journalistic guidelines. They are able to make a news item within a given schedule. The students are able to evaluate the trustworthiness of information sources. They can write interview questions and do an information gathering interview. The students can produce journalistic photographs. They recognise the most important image types of photojournalism and understand their meaning. The students understand how images can be used to influence the reader and are able to analyse the ways photographers use to get their results.
Content
The central genres of journalism. Journalistic instructions and the role of the Council for mass media in Finland for adhering to good journalistic conduct. The laws and regulations affecting journalistic production. News selection and news criteria. The process of news work both in newspapers and in electric media. Structure of a piece of news. Journalistic information search. Journalistic interview. Photojournalism and journalistic work process. The relationship between image and text and image analysis. Genres of photojournalism.
