Objective of course
Students are familiar with the perioperative nursing process including preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care. They learn the nursing skills needed especially in intraoperative phase of patients' care. Students learn how to maintain and act according the aseptic principles in operating units. They also know the basics when working in the role of a scrub nurse. Students understand the phases of anesthesia and are able to observe patients during anesthetic procedures. They require awareness of the responsible work of anesthetic nurse after the course. They are also familiar with the postoperative care in the recovery room. Students learn documentation in perioperative care. Patient teaching skills are developed in day surgery. Students know the phases of balanced anesthesia and they are familiar with agents used during the procedures. They understand the patient care under spinal or epidural anesthesia. Students know the basic safety rules of using technical equipment. They are familiar with electrical accidents, their causes and prevention.

Perioperative nursing process
Aseptic principles
Surgical hand disinfection, gowning and glovening techniques
Creating the sterile field (patient skin prep, draping, instrumentation)
Spinal and epidural anesthesia
Recovery room nursing
Positioning the patient

G218B-8 Supervised clinical training, 5 cr
Students learn perioperative nursing skills in theatre or out ward unit. Under the order of named supervisor they learn to observe the anesthetized patient.
