Objectives

Based on the principles of sustainable development, the students plan and build soil structures and foundations from refined soils and industrial by-products. They know how to exam pollution of soil and how clean harmful compositions out from soil. They know the working time and permanent environmental effects. The students especially focus on the factors of water permeability of soils.

Content

The students know the effects of ground and foundations engineering to soils, bedrock, waterways and groundwater. They know how to prevent the effects during and after the building periods. They know the functions of protection and isolation layers. They know how to use left-over soil. They know how to improve soil. They know how to use industrial by-products in the structures. They know the sustainability model and the sustainable development of the soil structures.

Literature: To be announced at the beginning of the course. Handouts given during the lectures. Teaching methods: self study/distance learning, exercises, assignments, practical work, laboratory work/workshop and exam. Prerequisites: Geotechnique and Foundation engineering. Language of tuition: Finnish.
