VISION AND VALUES OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME

The use of the natural resources, population growth, and unsustainable economical development have created significant local and global environmental problems. The efforts to protect the environment and mitigation of harmful impacts have become one of the major political and industrial issues all over the world. This has created an increased demand for engineering professionals that can influence and develop new and more sustainable production and service processes.

Professionals that are able to work in international and complex environments are needed. The environment, and the skills needed to manage and live with it, must be considered in a holistic way. Recognising both the interdependence and interactions of people and how we function within the built and natural environments are necessary elements in problem-solving.

The interdisciplinary concept of this Energy and Environmental Engineering programme has a firm grounding in the natural and engineering sciences, without forgetting the influence of the societal, legal, and economical dimensions. The Degree Programme prepares the students to use strategies and tools to integrate environmental management and engineering into all levels and types of businesses, industries and other organisations.

Special focus is on sustainability and efficient use of natural resources, especially water. The students have a possibility to gain competences in entrepreneurship, logistics, energy technologies, environmental and quality management. The Degree Programme has a strong international dimension and the graduates of the Degree Programme will get competence to work in international environments.

WHY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING?

Environmental field is one of the fastest growing areas of business and industry. Global market and increasing demand for sustainable products and services translates into growing need for environmental experts. As an example, water treatment business is among the fastest growing markets in the world. In addition, traditional industry, public administration and the NGO sector need variety of experts in planning, designing and implementing projects in the field of environmental engineering and management.

AIM OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME

The overall goal of the Degree Programme is to provide students diverse working life skills and attitudes, together with the specialized professional skills and competences in the field of energy and environmental engineering. The aim is that students achieve a high level professional knowledge to work as knowledge-based professionals and in professional management positions. Thus the Degree Programme fulfills the NQF Level 6 requirements.

The graduates of the Degree Programme can steer the processes of industrial production and public services in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner. They know how to take into account the principles of sustainable development, material and energy efficiency, process emissions and environmental management. Environmental engineer can plan and implement field studies, environmental monitoring and remediation programmes and make conclusions and suggestions for further actions.

During the professional studies students will achieve advanced knowledge and skills for working in energy industry, logistics, environmental monitoring and process control as well as entrepreneurs. The curriculum makes it possible for the student to choose courses according to the student’s own interest.

The annual themes of the Degree Programme are:

First Year

The theme of the first-year studies is to create strong foundation to the structure and function of the industrial and natural environments. Development of environmental thinking in engineering is emphasized and general engineering skills of students are strengthened. After completing the studies of the first study year students will have competence to work as assistants with simple, routine environmental monitoring, LCA and EIA processes when instructed and supervised.

Second Year

The theme of the second-year studies is to strengthen both the general engineering skills and gain working life skills with different environmental engineering and management practices. After completing the studies on the second year, students have competence to assist as supervised in different environmental monitoring and management projects, environmental engineering industry, management and administration.

Third Year

The theme of the third year is to deepen the environmental engineering skills and get competences in project work and practical environmental engineering tasks. After completing the studies of the third year, students have competence to work as a member of a team in environmental monitoring, environmental management projects and various jobs in environmental engineering industry, management and administration.

Fourth Year

The theme of the fourth year is to advance students' competences through selected study modules and prepare them for challenges in working life. After completing the Degree Programme, students have competences to monitor and report environmental quality (air, water, soil) for the industry and public administration. They have competences to work in international environment, develop industrial processes in environmental monitoring, environmental management and development in various jobs in environmental engineering industry and environmental administration.

Typical job titles that the graduates have after their studies include: environmental engineer, environmental planner, environmental coordinator, environmental manager, project manager, project engineer, quality engineer, etc.

Curriculum development and working life cooperation

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND WORKING LIFE COOPERATION

The Curriculum complies with the European and National Higher Education Qualification Frameworks (Bachelor of Engineering, EQF 6).

Our Curriculum is being continiously developed and it has been prepared in close collaboration with the working life. The Degree Programme has its own Advisory Board that consists of working life and student representatives, which participates in the development work. New learning methods, especially project studies, working life skills and latest environmental technology, are an essential part of the Curriculum.
