Objectives

The students gain skills to analyse their own work by learning about the concepts and methods of cultural research and aesthetics.

Content

The students examine art and culture from the viewpoints of subjects – creators, participants and viewers – and objects – art and cultural works. The research of visual culture is especially emphasised. The relationship between art and aesthetics is examined by the concept of beauty in the Western philosophy and its criticism. The course may contain different viewpoints to the tradition of aesthetics by examining it from the viewpoint of social sciences, popular culture or feminist aesthetics.
