Description
The studies provide the skills required in media work, specially in artistic and production tasks in the television and film work. The students can choose a study path from production, scriptwriting, cinematography, editing or sound design. In addition, the studies may include e.g. radio work, documentary, or directing.
The aim is that on completion of the programme the student:
- Is able to make creative and workable solutions in brainstorming, script writing and production.
- Masters the expression, working methods and technology in his specialty area.
- Is able to work. communicate and interact in typical work life situations in his speciality area.
- Is able to plan and manage media productions and act as a member of a production team.
- Is able to work as an entrepreneur in the field at the domestic and international markets.
The most important method in studies is project work. In addition, studies include lectures, on-line learning, written assignments, work placement as a trainee and selfstudy. The degree programme may also be connected to other fields of study at TAMK or at other universities. After studies common to all in the programme, the students' study path is deepened in smaller groups, selected in the second study year.
In project work, our values are responsibility, sustainable development and occupational safety. Being a professional in the field includes understanding of professional ethics and media ethics. We appreciate the artistic and social heritage of audiovisual media, while at the same time, the aim is to develop new creative contents and ways of contents production.
DESCRIPTIONS OF STUDY PATHS
Production:
The producer is able to lead a creative team. He is able to develop and commercialise a variety of media content together with the partners and the work team. He is able to plan, organize and manage the project throughout its life cycle. The producer is able to market both ideas and a wide range of finished products.
Scriptwriting:
The scriptwriter is able to create, refine, dramatise and produce contents in different media and formats. He masters pre-planning and concept design from the perspective of script writing. He knows the funding possibilities of the audiovisual sector, is able to market his ideas and develop the contents together with the various partners.
Cinematography and Lighting:
The cinematographer is responsible for the camera work and is capable of leading a camera crew. He is an expert who designs the visual style of the production together with the team. The expertise includes storyboard, visual design, lighting, and multi-camera work skills, as well as the use of camera equipment and its accessories.
Cutting:
The editor can design and implement the visual look for audiovisual products. He masters the pre-planning stages of the production, online cutting, color definition and other post-production tasks. The essential tools for the editor are editing units and programmes, as well as programmes for photo editing and effects.
Sound Design:
Sound designer designs and implements the sound dramaturgy for audiovisual or audio products. He masters the sound recording, post-editing and playback tools in different spaces and formats. The tools include microphones, recorders, audio workstations and audio systems. The sound designer is able to work in different audio projects as a responsible designer and implementer.
ANNUAL THEMES
Year 1: Cinematic expression and project management
After the first year, the student will know the basics of cinematic expression, professional roles and work processes in the field. He will at least be able to assist in professional film and television productions.
Year 2: Television production and professional expertise
In the second year of the studies, the students concentrate on learning the television formats, pre-production of non-fictional programmes and work flow in single-camera and multi-camera TV-productions. Professional studies are directed towards areas of expertise. After the second study year, the student will be able to work in audio-visual productions, or in trainee positions in their own field.
Year 3: Customer projects and the deepening of the field
During the third year, students develop and implement audiovisual projects with real life partners and customers. Professional studies, work placements and foreign exchange may be accomodated too.
4. year: Expertise
In the fourth year, the aim is to provide strong working life skills in the field and the capacity to act in artistic or technical advisory positions. The student is planning and implementing a thesis project e.g. an audio-visual project, or a pilot development project. There is always an investigative and analytical written report of the project included.
PRACTICAL TRAINING AND WORKING LIFE
A student’s internship will last for about five months (30 credits). It is recommended that a student familiarizes him/herself with more than one work task and working place during the internship period. Each student has a supervising teacher for the internship, and the school and the workplace will jointly agree on the working and learning objectives of a student.
The media graduates are typically working at television, film, advertising and post-production companies, as well as at theaters and event productions companies.
Bachelor of Culture and Arts (240 ECTS credit points in four years) consists of:
- Basic and professional studies 180 cr
- Practical training 30 cr
- Free choice studies 15 cr
- Bachelor´s thesis 15 cr
Curriculum development and working life cooperation
The curriculum complies with the European and national higher education qualifications framework (NQF and EQF). The curriculum development has been carried out in consultation with the Advisory Board of Art and Communication, other members of professional world and film and television students.
