Osaamistavoitteet

The course aims to give an understanding of the chemicals, processes, machines, safety and environmental considerations involved in industrial textile dyeing, printing, finishing, and caring of textiles.
After completing the course, the student is able to
• understand the chemistry of textile dyes, pigments, and finishing and laundry chemicals
• understand the industrial dyeing, printing, finishing and laundry processes
• identify various textile finishes and their effects on fabric properties
• perform color fastness testing and testing of functional finishes
• evaluate effects of dyeing, printing and finishing on fabric quality
• evaluate the environmental impact of dyeing, printing, finishing, and textile care
• implement safety practices in textile processing

Sisältö

Pretreatment processes; Dye classes, dye-fibre affinity; Different industrial dyeing and printing techniques for different fibre types; Color theory and color matching; Mechanical and chemical finishing processes; Functional finishes and their applications: Water, laundry chemicals and industrial laundry processes; Water-detergent-fibre interaction; Soil removal; Waste management in textile dyeing and finishing; Occupational health and safety standards; Sustainability related to textile coloration, finishing and care

Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1-2)

The student can understand the basic dyeing, finishing and textile care processes, and understand the effect of these processes into the textile quality and properties.
The student can solve simple problems that are comparable to the tasks covered in the course.
The student takes responsibility for his or her own performance.

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3-4)

The student is able to independently explain the most important textile dyeing, finishing and textile care processes and technologies related to the topic. The student understand the effect of these processes into the textile quality and properties at more advanced level.
The student is able to apply his / her knowledge and perform basic and more demanding tasks.
The student takes responsibility for his / her performance and commits not only to his / her own activities but also to the activities of the group.

The student has a comprehensive understanding of the textile dyeing, finishing and textile care processes and understand the effect of these processes into the textile quality and properties at more advanced level.
The student is able to solve challenging and applied tasks. The student is able to look for different solution options and justify his / her choice.
The student can cooperate responsibly, flexibly and constructively, develops his/her own and the group's interaction, works responsibly and in a committed manner considering the community and field requirements.
