Objectives (course unit)

The target of the course is to give the basic knowledge of paper making, about different raw materials used in paper industry, classification of paper and board grades and their end uses. The student will know the global production and consumption of paper and board today and in the future. The student knows the global forest resources, how the forests are managed and common wood procurement practices.

Content (course unit)

Unit processes in paper making, fiber raw material and pulping (chemical pulp, mechanical pulp and recycled pulp), other raw material for paper making, printing and writing papers, packaging material, grafical paperboards, special papers and paperboards. The global trends in production and consumption of paper and board today and in the future. Global forest resources, forestry principles and wood procurement. The students will make their own paper sheets in paper laboratory and analyse their main properties.

Assessment methods and criteria

Maximum points 60 consist of: paper and paperboard companies (max 15 points), laboratory report (max 15 points) future task (max 10 points), exam max 20 points. Activity in lessons can upgrade the grade.

Can cooperate responsibly and is ready to develop his/her interaction skills.
Takes responsibility and commits to the group activities in addition to his/her own work.

Knowping. Understands extensive entities and relations between them. Can make an analysis of the future in the bioproduct field. (icl. Circular economy and other megatrends).
