Bachelor of Engineering

Degree title:
Bachelor of Engineering

Credits:
240 ects

Duration:
4 years (240 cr)

Start semester:
Autumn 2024

Description

The competence-based curriculum of the Construction Engineering degree program provides basic skills in various areas of construction during the first two years. During the last two years, the student deepens his knowledge in the competence units of the different fields of study, where the knowledge and skills of the field of study are comprehensively familiarized using modern construction information technology.

In the field of study in Building Construction technology, competence is increased in the structural and construction planning of building sites using modeling and modern information technology programs. The studies also include basic information on production technology, financial matters and studies on the technical systems of buildings.

The field of study in Building Production prepares for managing the implementation of building construction projects. The studies provide the skills to manage schedules, costs, quality, construction site techniques and contracts and procurement in both new and renovation construction.

In the field of study in Civil Engineering, expertise is gained in the planning, implementation and maintenance of traffic routes, various land and water structures, foundations, water supply networks and environmental structures. IT modeling is a key part of the studies of the infrastructure construction major.

In the field of study in Facility Engineering and Renovation, the technical and financial skills are enabled to work in real estate maintenance and management tasks as well as in renovation construction projects. These studies include basic information on building construction technology and building production technology.

Curriculum development and working life cooperation

This curriculum for the Degree Program in Construction Engineering is an updated version of the curriculum introduced in 2018, prepared in cooperation with Tampere University's Civil Engineering education. The curriculum has many studies with the same competence goals as in the Tampere University's Civil Engineering degree program.

Further information

BASIC VALUES OF CONSTRUCTION
The guidelines for the field of construction are life cycle thinking, ecology and sustainable development. Constructed environment is significant for peoples’ well-being, the economical and social development of society and the quality of living surroundings. The goals for the design, construction and maintenance of buildings are healthiness, safety, functionality and high quality. The construction business emphasises customer orientation, economic efficiency, entrepreneurship and healthy competition.

DESCRIPTION
Two thirds of our national heritage is tied to buildings or urban structures. The construction business employs directly or indirectly approximately 25% of Finland’s work force. The construction solutions affect everybody’s living and business conditions for generations to come, which means that the field is closely monitored by the public and the policies, and it is under extensive legislation.

Construction consists of house building, infrastructure i.e. civil and environmental construction as well as building use and maintenance. House building consists of the building and renovation of e.g. living, business and industrial buildings. Infrastructure construction consists of environmental technology and the building and maintenance of traffic and water supply networks, bridges, harbours etc. There has been a strong shift towards renovation and maintenance and the development seems to continue on the same track.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A construction project requires seamless collaboration between the various parties involved. In many tasks, the prerequisite for coping is combining economical thinking with technical expertise. Success in the field requires customer-based operation methods and service mentality, as well as applying ICT. In addition to mathematics and science, the working life requires management, relationship, communication and negotiation skills, as well as value competence. The participation in international and multicultural projects requires strong and vast expertise, language skills as well as knowledge of different cultures and the ability to work in diverse environments.
