Objectives (course unit)

The student
- is able to plan, implement and evaluate the monitoring of the growth and development of school-age children in cooperation with the pupil and his/her family
- is able to guide and support school-age children to choices for health promotion
- is able to guide and support the family of school-age children in parenthood and in promoting healthy lifestyles
- is able to assess the need for special support and further care for a school-age child and his/her family in cooperation with the pupil and the family
- is able to maintain and promote a safe growth community and environment for schoolchildren in cooperation with families and other actors

Content (course unit)

- public health nursing for school-age children
- family nursing in public health nursing
- periodic health checks for pupils
- health guidance for the school-aged (individual and group level)
- student health care as public health nursing
- multidisciplinary inspection of health and safety in the educational environment
- working methods: early intervention and advising, motivational guidance

Prerequisites (course unit)

Completed studies of clinical nursing and anatomy and physiology (135 cr).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)

The student
- masters the essential contents of pupils' periodic health examinations
- has right knowledge, but the details are
unconnected, at the level of recognition and their explanations are incomplete
- observes the health of the pupil and the family only from a limited perspective
- perceives incompletely the specific needs of an individual pupil and family
- understands the family perspective on a theoretical level

Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)

The student
- masters the contents of regular health check-ups
- is able to use evidence-based knowledge and explain things from many different perspectives
- uses the client and family aspects in a versatile way
- is able to identify the most important health needs of schoolchildren and families
- understands the role of student health as part of public health nursing
- understands the importance of viewing the welfare of schoolchildren from the perspective of the well-being of the school community

Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)

The student
- is able to take a holistic view of the situation of the schoolchild and family based on the evidenced knowledge and demonstrates the ability to support the pupil and the family extensively
- is able to identify the special needs of schoolchildren and families and demonstrates extensive capacity for monitoring and follow-up care
- is able to manage extensively the working methods
- is able to utilise the multi-professional approach
- is able to examine comprehensively the well-being of schoolchildren from the perspective of well-being of the school community
