Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will understand the interpreting process as a communicative action. They will be able to describe the interpreter’s role and the expectations associated with it. The student will be able to explain the significance of various components of a succesfully completed interpration assignment. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the principles of preparing for an interpreting assignment. They will master the basic techniques of prima vista interpreting and note-taking, and be able to describe the specific features of communication situations.

Content

This course examines the entire interpreting process from preparation to using feedback to development needs (time management and pricing, preparing; coping and personal well-being). It also covers interpreting as a communicative situation (performance and voice control, communicative context and interaction, control of the situation); interpreting techniques (note-taking techniques, prima vista interpreting).
