Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be able to describe the main operating principles in their second working language's society and legal system that are important when working as a court interpreter. The student will also be able to take these principles into account in a court interpreting situation. They will be able to define, handle, and compare the central concepts and terms of court interpreting in the areas of preliminary investigation, criminal and civil law, and immigration, using both of their working languages. The student will be able to analyse the differences in the aforementioned content and justify their choices in interpretation.
Content
The course unit compares the societies and legal systems of the student’s working languages. It explores the main concepts of immigration affairs and criminal and civil law concepts such as criminal offences and penalties. The course unit covers the language and terminology of legal texts and their contents in the student’s working languages.
