Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have a thorough understanding of the use of text corpora in different stages of translation work. The student will be able to explain the corpora resources available for both of their working languages. They will be able to perform searches in corpora with tools such as queries written in the CQP language and be able to interpret the search results. The student will understand the principles of assembling corpora and have the skills that are necessary for assembling their own corpora.
Content
The course unit uses corpora mainly as a research tool and explores their use in translation work. Different types of corpora in different stages of translation are examined, including proofreading, verifying terms, and imitating styles. Students will also learn to assemble their own corpora using tools such as TextHammer and SketchEngine.
