Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have an understanding of the role of translation technology in translation work, understand the principles involved in the use of translation tools, and know what types of knowledge applications are available on the market today. The student will know how to get the information they need about translation tools and their use. They will be able to discuss the most common markup languages (HTML, XML), formats (TMX, TBX), and coding standards (ANSI, Unicode, etc.). They will also be familiar with other applications that support translation work, such as text and speech recognition.
Content
This course gives an introduction to the role of translation technology in modern translation work. It includes topics such as artificial intelligence, language and translation technology, andlinguistic data in computer memory. The main tools covered are translation memories and machine translation. It also addresses research and translation technology: term banks, text corpora and the internet.
