Objectives

After completing the study unit, the student is able to
- connect special needs pedagogy to pedagogy and education and is able to name the fields close to special needs pedagogy
- know the historical phases of special needs pedagogy and define its key concepts
- describe Finland’s special needs education system and legislation for students of all ages
- apply the latest research data in special needs pedagogy to their work.

Content

During the study unit, we will seek to answer the following questions:
- What is special needs pedagogy like as a field of study?
- How do the historical developments of special needs pedagogy affect the present?
- Which regulations and instructions affect the arrangement of learning support, and how?
- How can you use research data in special needs pedagogy when working in the teaching and education field?

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

To receive the grade ‘Satisfactory’ (1–2), the student must be able to
- connect special needs pedagogy to pedagogy and education and is able to name the fields close to special needs pedagogy
- know the historical phases of special needs pedagogy and define its key concepts.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

To receive the grade ‘Good’ (3–4), the student must be able to
- connect special needs pedagogy to pedagogy and education and is able to name the fields close to special needs pedagogy
- know the historical phases of special needs pedagogy and define its key concepts
- describe Finland’s special needs education system and legislation for students of all ages.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
